Perhaps I am already dead
Perhaps I am already dead (2021) | 3min. | Cyprus | experimental
Written and Directed by Tonia Mishiali
March 2020. Lockdown during the pandemic. Homebound. Dreams. Thoughts. Feelings. Fear of death.
Having been experiencing sleep paralysis for years, I share a day in my 'isolated' life during the quarantine.
Director Statement
I have been experiencing sleep paralysis for years now, a condition in which the mind realizes that it is awake but cannot move the body. This happens to me while I am waking up, usually in the middle of the night. It's a frightening feeling.
During the lockdown this was getting worse. Researching it, I found out that sleep paralysis is believed to affect people in times of stress.
Inspired by Rene Magritte's painting "The Key of Dreams", I created this little personal film almost as a fragmented recollection of my dream-like thoughts and feelings, which revolve around life and fear of death.
